Idleness and Violence

“I work to stay alive.”  – Bette Davis.    “Get busy living or get busy dying.”    – Stephen King

Talk show pundits, politicians, and bar room philosophers banter around the causes/reasons for the seemingly irrational behavior of thousands of protestors over the recent Grand Jury decision to not indict officer Darrin Wilson.  The facts, as reported by the Ferguson Prosecutor, discredited much of the previously reported account of events leading up to the shooting death of teenager Michael Brown.  Yet protesters continue to disregard sworn testimony or the discredit of the same.

A new symbol for nationwide protestors, “Hands up, don’t shoot,” continues to be the war cry even though its origin is founded on a lie.  It never happened.  Irrational!!

Our focus on perceived police racism ( sometimes real) as the root of the problem is a distractor.  We hack at the leaves of the cause of disruptive social events such as the Ferguson protests with rubber machete’s when we should be running excavators twenty-four-seven to expose its real roots…roots of poverty, hopelessness, idleness, broken dreams and hate.

The Bette Davis quote is a classic.  Having arrived as an actress at a point in her life where work was no longer a financial necessity, she continued working to “stay alive.”  The Michael Browns of the world and millions like him, including thousands of the “national” Ferguson protestors apparently didn’t and don’t know what it is like to experience the satisfaction of having meaningful work.  Michael Brown would be alive today if, instead of stealing cigarillos,  he was doing homework or resting in preparation for reporting to his job.  Instead, the curse of idleness wrapped its tentacles around a young mans aspirations and dreams, leaving him to roam the streets that fateful night in Ferguson, a young man without hope and without direction.

Who’s to blame?  A question for which there is no easy answer but one thing is for sure.  A national government blinded by ideology ignores facts, history and reality; a pattern destined to undermine the framework of economic expansion and consequently individual opportunity.

For six disruptive years, and before, our Federal Government has had its ladder placed against the wrong wall.  Instead of using rational policy changes to revive a flailing economy, the Obama administration has systematically and ignorantly stifled the engine of opportunity that made America the greatest country in the world.  The small business.   Regulation upon regulation have driven the golden goose to lay eggs of lead. In the midst of an economy whose recovery is anemic at best, the Federal Government needs to stop looking at Capitalism as the enemy and remember what made this country the worlds standard bearer for opportunity.  When that is done, the Michael Browns of the world will be so busy pursuing their dreams there will be no time or motivation to steal cigarillos.

Only Love Will Drive Out The Hate

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that.  Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”                       Martin Luther King

America seems be be feeding on a daily diet of troubling times.  Chaos on our southern border, increased poverty, expansion of terrorism through the rise of the Islamic extremist movement called Issis and now the shooting of a black teenager in Ferguson Missouri.  The undercurrent of black hate directed toward whites.  It appears that black citizens in this small Missouri town have bought into the doctrine of hate and unbridled bigotry peddled by Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, rather than adhere to the philosophy of the man who did more to give the downtrodden a dream.  That man:  Martin Luther King Jr.

It is unfortunate that racism still exists in America in spite of the progress made by Dr. King, Medgar Evers and other black reformers.  It must be stamped out.  What would Martin Luther King say this day if he were in Ferguson?  Would he not ask for reason and calm to prevail, for emotions to give way to patience?  Failure to allow the legal system in America to fulfill its purpose is to say that we as Americans do not believe in the God given freedoms that this country is to provide to all men and women.

I pray daily for peace in America.  I pray for an increased measure of love for all mankind.  I am saddened when I see the reaction without reason that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson etc. have instilled in the hearts of the blacks of Ferguson.  So much of what Martin  Luther King fought and died for has been undone by A & J.

America’s Debt: The Monster That Feeds Itself.

“It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debt as it goes.  A principle which, if acted upon, would save one-half the wars of the world.”                                                                        -Thomas Jefferson

America’s national debt is approaching a whopping eighteen trillion dollars and it adds one million dollars every three seconds and that’s just the interest.    That’s the number 18 followed by nine zeros.  If allocated to every man woman and child in America that amounts to approximately $60,000.00 each! Sixty Thousand dollars and climbing!!!

When did it become a principle of democracy that a nation could remain strong by spending more than it earns?  How many of Washington’s politicians manage their personal finances the same way they manage the country’s finances?  I bet 0.  The idea that America has a debt ceiling is preposterous when a majority of congressmen/women who worry more about their political survival than balancing the books can vote to change the ceiling.  Up it goes.

A spiraling debt.  A spendthrift congress.  A dysfunctional White House (Including an incompetent President).  An Attorney General who has given new meaning to the word “redacted.”  One government agency after another that has betrayed the American people including the Department of Justice, the IRS, the Veterans Administration, the EPA and the list goes on.  All spell out a recipe for disaster.

We could all just complain and put our collective heads in the sand and wait for the hammer to fall or we could do something about it.  I choose to believe that the greatest democracy in the world is comprised of enough common sense thinking people that we can avoid self destruction.  In America we determine our destiny at the polls.  In two and a-half months we have a chance to rise up and declare that we will not stand by and watch America be transformed from a country of the free and the brave to a country of the poor and the weak.  November 4, 2014 needs to be the day that we stand up for the Constitution, get up, go to the polls and restore conservative control of the senate!

I’m Trying

I watch and listen and think and wonder and then watch and listen and think again, seeking hope on hope that this president will reveal something to make me honor him.  I keep coming up empty.  His speech on the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech had minor moments but was flat and uninspiring.  Either you’ve got it or you don’t.  Martin Luther King had it.  Barrak Hussein Obama does not.  King could have been a statesman, he was well on his way, but his brilliant life ended prematurely and tragically.  When is the African American community going to produce a man of his caliber…someone who can carry them out of the cesspool of poverty and be a uniter, not a divider.  Certainly not Barak Obama or Jesse Jackson or the race baiting, hate monger, money grubbing egocentric Al Sharpton.  Contrary to what the race hate peddlers would have all of us believe, whites want black Americans to succeed and they want them to succeed learning the same principles of hard work, honesty, loyalty, education and self-sufficiency that built this great nation.
