“I do not take a single newspaper nor read one a month, and I feel myself infinitely the happier for it.” – Thomas Jefferson
For many, including myself, the search for happiness is elusive. Of late I have been drawn to identify influences in my “retirement” life that adversely affect my state of happiness and I’m wondering if others lives are disrupted by my disruptors. Take a look.
1. I come home from whatever it is my wife and I are doing and turn on fox news. It doesn’t take long for me to start saying things to the television that I wouldn’t repeat here. I also review periodically the “mainstream” media as a way to find “balance” in the news. Again my blood pressure starts to rise when I see the spin, spin, spin. solution #1 Follow Thomas Jefferson’s advice.
2. I have a see food diet. I see food – I eat it. I look at myself in a suit and I think, I don’t look too bad, then I look at myself in the mirror when I step out of the shower and I think, you have no discipline. Solution #2: Stop the late night snacks.
3. I worry about the future. Will we ever be rid of our dysfunctional government? Will my investments be safe? Will my children and grandchildren be obedient and happy? Solution #3: Play more golf. Go fishing more often. Act on things I can control and stop thinking about things I cannot control. Hike more often. Read positive messages every day.
“It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debt as it goes. A principle which, if acted upon, would save one-half the wars of the world.” -Thomas Jefferson
America’s national debt is approaching a whopping eighteen trillion dollars and it adds one million dollars every three seconds and that’s just the interest. That’s the number 18 followed by nine zeros. If allocated to every man woman and child in America that amounts to approximately $60,000.00 each! Sixty Thousand dollars and climbing!!!
When did it become a principle of democracy that a nation could remain strong by spending more than it earns? How many of Washington’s politicians manage their personal finances the same way they manage the country’s finances? I bet 0. The idea that America has a debt ceiling is preposterous when a majority of congressmen/women who worry more about their political survival than balancing the books can vote to change the ceiling. Up it goes.
A spiraling debt. A spendthrift congress. A dysfunctional White House (Including an incompetent President). An Attorney General who has given new meaning to the word “redacted.” One government agency after another that has betrayed the American people including the Department of Justice, the IRS, the Veterans Administration, the EPA and the list goes on. All spell out a recipe for disaster.
We could all just complain and put our collective heads in the sand and wait for the hammer to fall or we could do something about it. I choose to believe that the greatest democracy in the world is comprised of enough common sense thinking people that we can avoid self destruction. In America we determine our destiny at the polls. In two and a-half months we have a chance to rise up and declare that we will not stand by and watch America be transformed from a country of the free and the brave to a country of the poor and the weak. November 4, 2014 needs to be the day that we stand up for the Constitution, get up, go to the polls and restore conservative control of the senate!
“It is incumbent on every government to pay its own debt as it goes. A principle which, if acted on would save one-half of the wars of the world.” Thomas Jefferson
I have always been impressed with the perennial positive attitude and constant smile of my brother-in-law. Never argumentative or negative but having the ability to state his position politically or personally in a positive clear manner. I wondered what it was about him that kept him this way and a recent conversation revealed his secret. We were discussing money matters and I asked him how much of a mortgage he had on his home, which would probably appraise close to a million dollars. His response: Mortgage? I’ve never owed anybody anything. Even the building where I held my dental practice, I’ve owned free and clear of debt.” The secret to his smile is out in the open.
Never in the history of this great nation have we been saddled with a more dysfunctional government comprised of politicians who are void of moral courage. Our nation is nearing bankruptcy yet nothing is done to reign in spending. Approaching 18 trillion dollars, the national debt threatens to destroy the dollar and has already cast a pall across the country in the form of a stagnant economy. Do our elected officials run their personal finances the same way they run the government? I think not. The American smile has been wiped away by the American debt and very few have the moral courage to right the sinking ship. The nation’s financial mismanagement is a sickness that, just like the body that has ingested spoiled food, will stimulate the vomit reflex. Crash of the financial market is inevitable without imposing of massive taxes on the people which will have the effect of destroying an already weakened economic recovery.
I had the rare but enlightening experience a numbers of months back to listen to a liberal talk show. I believe the fellows name was Tom Hartman. A caller made the comment that what Republicans do not realize is that Thomas Jefferson was the driving force behind the birth of the Democratic party. I wanted to, but did not, call in to remind that caller that the Democratic Party in Jefferson’s day bears absolutely no resemblance to today’s party of liberal idealogy. Case in point: Jefferson said, “To compel a man to furnish funds for the propagation of ideas he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.” Today’s democratic party has mastered the doctrine of the dole as well as consistently holding to world views, most of which are in direct conflict with Jefferson’s political and personal views. I give regularly, VOLUNTARILY, to help the downtrodden and those gifts come both in the form of money as well as time. To take the fruit of my labor and distribute as a handout to pay for socially destructive government giveaways is, as Jefferson says, “sinful and tyrannical. True help for those who need it most has and will continue to come from the hearts of Americans everywhere who voluntarilly give so much to the poor and who recognize that giving money to the government to help the poor is like asking a hungry wolf to carry a steak dinner to Little Red Riding Hood. The Obama Government has become the monstrous enemy of the poor. I will never forget Obama’s words in his first election: “We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.” If Republicans had any guts they would fundamentally transform America by refusing to change the debt ceiling. That, my friends, would bring about a transformation in America that would be one thousand times better than the one we have had thrust upon us by this inept, narcissistic community organizer.
